Sheep
There are quite a lot of sheep in cumbria but by far the most common on the hills are herdwick, rough fell and swaldale. off hill sheep are mainly suffolk, texel and north of england mule. Herdwick and rough fell especialy are farmed a lot up on the hills and gave been since the early medival times. To the right is a herdwick on loughrigg | ![]() |
![]() | To the left is a cross between a herdwick and swaledale the sheep is called a north counrty mule and can be made of any two of these sheep cross breeded texel, herdwick and swaledale You can tell if it's not pure herdwick if it's female and has horns, unlike the pure herdwick rams who have huge curly ones. |
Herdwicks are born black then get white patches, after a year they become brown and are called hogits. When they are three they are adults and have babies as well as the next few years to follow.
